The Fire Extinguisher Simulator in Virtual Reality is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive foundation in fire safety through immersive and interactive virtual reality experiences. This course bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills by placing trainees in realistic fire scenarios where they must identify hazards, select the correct extinguisher, and execute the proper response procedure under pressure.
Aims and Objectives
The Fire Extinguisher Simulator…
- Provides participants with a solid understanding of the four main fire extinguisher types — water, foam, CO₂, and dry powder, including their colour codes, appropriate uses, and critical contraindications.
- Delivers hands-on, procedural training within a safe virtual environment, requiring trainees to follow the correct response sequence: activate the alarm, select the right extinguisher, remove the pin, aim correctly, and suppress the fire.
- Familiarises participants with two realistic fire scenarios. A bin fire and an overloaded electrical socket fire, building the confidence and decision-making skills needed in real emergencies.
- Cultivates critical thinking by presenting trainees with the consequences of incorrect extinguisher selection, reinforcing the hazards of applying water or foam to an electrical fire.

Learning Outcomes

you can…
- Identify all four fire extinguisher types by colour code, name, and appropriate fire class, demonstrating an understanding of when each should and should not be deployed.
- Execute the full response procedure accurately within both VR scenarios, from sounding the alarm through to safe fire suppression. Skills directly transferable to the physical workplace.
- Make correct, time-pressured decisions about extinguisher selection, understanding the serious risks posed by incorrect use, particularly on electrical fires.
- Demonstrate safe handling of a fire extinguisher, including pin removal, correct stance, and appropriate aiming technique for each fire type.
“It’s perfect because it was like being in the room — actually putting the fire out. I wanted to pick up the extinguisher. I could feel myself leaning in over the bin. You’re still getting a little adrenaline rush even with the VR set on. You do feel like you’re really present and you’re putting out the fire.”Kieran Scullion | Fire Fighter, Athlone Fire Station
